Wooded surface presents distinct characteristics in both appearance and maintenance needs. So, there are many queries regarding this surface, but one question often asked by DIY lover house owners is “Can you paint over stained wood?”. Well, the answer is that if you prime and prep your wood properly, you can paint over stained wood.

However, there are many who don’t know a lot about stained wood.

What is wood stain?

Wood stain is a semi-transparent coating that adds colour to the wood while preserving its natural characteristics, like colour and grain patterns. The way a stain works is by using a solvent to soak pigment into wood fibres, which causes the pigment to set and bind to the wood. That’s why a stain is much more difficult to remove because it penetrates the wood, as opposed to paint, which sits on the wood surface and can be sanded off.

Why would you paint over a stained wood?

One may decide to paint stained wood rather than replace it for a variety of reasons:

  • Outdated appearance: Although that deep mahogany finish of stain was popular in the 1990s, it can now seem dated or heavy.
  • Wear and damage: Stained wood frequently reveals some texture and is unable to fully conceal imperfections, but painting provides a smooth surface and hides any damage.
  • Style upgrades: Paint allows you to match and style however you like, whether you’re going for a modern, minimalist look or something a little cosier and rustic.

What type of paint should be used on wood with stain?

Expert residential painters in Sydney often suggest these types of paints for stained wood surfaces-

  • Acrylic Paint– Water-based, fast-drying option for water-based stains, but requires latex or water-based primer.
  • Oil-based Paint– Covers oil-based stains, works well in high-traffic areas and requires oil-based primer.
  • Latex Paint– Water-based option for painting over water-based stains and needs latex primer for proper adhesion.
  • Oil-based Enamel– Ideal for doors, trim, and cabinetry with an oil-based stain underneath and requires an oil-based primer.

What are the steps to follow while painting a stained wood surface?

If you follow a few steps and instructions properly, stained wood can be painted perfectly-

Step 1: Find the existing wood stain type

Compatibility between your chosen paint and the previous surface is ensured by being aware of a few characteristics of your wood. Put a drop of water on the discoloured surface, for example. It’s probably water-based if the droplet soaks in quickly, but it’s probably oil-based if it beads up and sits on top.

Step 2: Clean and degloss

Years of polish and hand oils are stored in stained wood. Use a mild degreaser to scrub, then rinse and allow to dry. To allow the primer to bite, apply a liquid deglosser to break the glossy lacquer.

Step 3: Lightly sand

For mechanical adhesion, a quick scuff-sand (180 grit) produces micro-scratches. Dust the surface with a vacuum and tack-cloth it until it squeaks. Keep in mind that after priming, you will also need to sand again.

Step 4: Prime entirely

Depending on the type of wood stain that was previously discussed, apply one thick coat of bonding primer. Allow it to cure as directed on the label; normally, we advise 24 hours, but if absolutely required, we advise at least 4–8 hours.

Step 5: Sand and check

It’s time to sand once more now. Using a used 220-grit sponge, lightly sand the primed surface before wiping it clean. Use a second spot prime to touch up any shadows or knots.

Step 6: Final coats

Use a short-napped smooth roller to finish over the flat areas after brushing the areas that cannot be rolled. Brushes pick up corners and edges, but a good roller will reduce the amount of applicator marks on the flat, smooth areas. Sand very lightly and apply the last coat after it dries, which should take about 4 hours.
